Bed Bug Identification
Bed Bugs
What are bed bugs?
Blood-feeding pests that prefer human blood as their primary food source, bed bugs are difficult to avoid because they want to live near us as we are their meal ticket!
These insects are about the size and shape of an apple seed and are reddish-brown; after feeding, their body swells, elongates, and turns a deeper purplish-red color.
Bed bugs do not fly, and they also don’t jump from place to place; to travel significant distances, bed bugs hitchhike. They notoriously move from one place to another by crawling onto people or personal belongings like bags or furniture.
Are bed bugs dangerous?
Bed bugs aren’t blood-feeding pests that regularly compromise the health of their hosts because the spread of diseases by bed bugs is not a significant concern. However, having bed bugs biting and feeding on your blood every night is never ideal. Their bites can become swollen and itchy and can lead to a secondary infection. Also, once a homeowner discovers these pests in their house, it leads to sleepless nights resulting in health problems due to lack of sleep and stress.
Why do I have a bed bug problem?
The more human activity there is, the more likely bed bugs will also be present. As people move in and out of areas, bed bugs will be moving with them. Places like hotels, theme parks, airports, movie theaters, schools, hospitals, and shopping centers are common bed bugs hot spots. After coming into contact with bed bugs, you will introduce them wherever you travel next, either another public place or your own home.
Where will I find bed bugs?
Bed bugs are not a pest that you will find crawling around your house during the day, these pests are nocturnal, and during the day, they hide in small cracks and crevices they find that they can squeeze their flat oval-shaped bodies into. Some of the bed bug’s favorite daytime hideouts include the seams of mattresses, behind couch cushions, inside electrical outlets, under clutter, in drawers, and behind wooden door trim or wall hangings (clocks or pictures).
Bed bugs feed at night when we are sleeping; if you are allergic to their saliva, you will begin finding unexplained bug bites when you wake. Their bites often form a line because they typically feed three different times, having “breakfast,” “lunch,” and “dinner.” In addition to their bites, other signs of a bed bug infestation include:
- A sweet, musty odor that develops in certain areas of your home.
- Finding piles of their shed skins on the floors, in drawers, or under mattresses.
- Finding drops of blood or dark streaks of excrement on mattresses, box springs, or linens.
